Ikuko Iwamoto - Sea Urchin ContainerIkuko Iwamoto - Ceramics Ikuko Iwamoto began her ceramic training in Japan before moving to London to study at Camberwell and then the Royal College of Art. Working from her studio in London, Ikuko creates amazingly tactile ceramics inspired by natural forms. Each piece treads a fine line between the functional and the sculptural. Ikuko says of her work: ‘I make exquisite cups and other objects for a bizarre tea ceremony. They suggest the everyday, the ordinary, but are in fact extra-ordinary. They are the vehicle to make visiblean invisible, microscopic world. A world of intricacy and detail, of mathematical pattern and organic chaos, of beauty and repulsion.’ Ikuko makes the main body of each piece from a slip-casting, using a hand-made mould. Every part of the decoration, including every single spike or dot, is individually attached by hand. All of the pieces are painstakingly made from porcelain
